开关中除了接点之外，也会有可动件使接点导通或不导通，开关可依可动件的不同为分为杠杆开关（Toggle switch）、按键开关、船型开关（Rocker switch）等，而可动件也可以是其他型式的机械连杆。

按照用途分类：波动开关，波段开关，录放开关，电源开关，预选开关，限位开关，控制开关，转换开关，隔离开关，行程开关，墙壁开关，智能防火开关等。
按照结构分类：微动开关，船型开关，钮子开关，拨动开关，按钮开关，按键开关，还有时尚潮流的薄膜开关、点开关。
按照接触类型分类：开关按接触类型可分为a型触点、b型触点和c型触点三种。接触类型是指，“操作（按下）开关后，触点闭合”这种操作状况和触点状态的关系。需要根据用途选择合适接触类型的开关。
按照开关数分类：单控开关、双控开关、多控开关、调光开关、调速开关、防溅盒、门铃开关、感应开关、触摸开关、遥控开关、智能开关、插卡取电开关、浴霸**开关。
眼观：一般好的产品外观平整、无毛刺，色泽亮丽和其材料采用优质abs+PC料，阻燃性能良好，不易碎。有的产品表面虽光洁，似乎涂了一层油，但色泽苍白、质地粗大，此类材料阻燃性不好，可以用火点燃试试它的阻燃性怎么样。要是点着很快熄灭，则为好的塑料，否则就是很差的塑料。
手按：好的产品面板用手不会直接取下，必须借助一定的**工具，而一般的非主流中低档产品则很容易用手取下面盖，造成家居和公共场所的不雅。选择时用食指、拇指分按面盖对角成端点，一端按住不动，另一端用力按压，面盖松动、下陷的产品质量较差，反之则质量可信。
耳听：轻按开关功能件，滑板式声音越轻微、手感越顺畅，节奏感强则质量较优；反之，启闭时声音不纯、动感涩滞，有中途间歇状态的声音则质量较差。
较简单的开关有二片名叫“触点”的金属，二触点接触时使电流形成回路，二触点不接触时电流开路。选用接点金属时需考虑其对抗腐蚀的程度，因为大多数金属氧化后会形成绝缘的氧化物，使接点无法正常工作。
看结构：较通用的开关结构有两种：
1、滑板式和摆杆式。滑板式开关声音淳厚，手感优雅舒适；摆杆式声音清脆，有稍许金属撞击声，在消灭电弧及使用寿命比传统的滑板式结构较稳定，技术成熟。
2、双孔压板接线较螺钉压线更安全。
因前者增加导线与电器件接触面积，耐氧化，不易发生松动、接触不良等帮障；而后者螺钉在坚固时容易压伤导线，接触面积小，使电件易氧化、老化，导致接触不良。
比选材：开关纯银导电能力强，发热量低，安全性能高，触点采用铜质材料则性能大打折扣；插座材料采用锡磷生铜片可得到配合较好的强度、韧性、弹性等指标，比一般黄铜作簧片的插座耐用数十倍，且较少有插板时强烈的电弧烧坏插座的现象；镀金的簧针较难氧化，性能稳定，能保证音质的清晰真实，数据传输的快速准确。
